The Origin

This style originated in prisons in the 70s and 80s; using single needle, homemade tattoo machines, but has since been refined to create some of the best, and most realistic tattoo art. Jack Rudy

When we talk about black and gray realism, we can't go without talking about JAck Rudy. Rudy is one of East Los AngeLes's most well known black and grAY realism tattoo artists. As rudy's career propelled forward he became known for his fine lines, realistic portraits, and smooth grayscale. From homemade tattoo machines to many moves around Southern Cal, and even the sell of a business to Don Ed Hardy-- Jack Rudy left a legacy of tattoo artistry. J


JAck Rudy passed away in January of 2025.


Freddy Negrete

Fine lines and subtle lines are at the foundation of Negrete's work. His first tattoos? ones he did on himself while serving a prison sentence. When his tattoo career started his primary clientele were Mexican Americans. As he explored his freedon, He would send his clients over to Good TIme Charlie's (where JAck Rudy was also tattoosing) and his boasting clientele helped him land a job. Negrete paved the way as one of the first Chicano tattoo artists. He will tattoo as his body allows and helped create the foundations for black and gray realism tattoo artist everywhere.
